Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main features of the chart, successfully identifying key trends such as the dominance of rented accommodation in 1918 and the rise of home ownership over time, as well as noting the crossover point in 1971. However, some of the specific data points mentioned are imprecise or contain inaccuracies when compared against typical chart trends, such as the statement that the percentage remained the same from 1939 to 1953. Furthermore, the selection and comparison of data lack a fully cohesive structure, leading to a tendency to over-generalise rather than presenting a fully developed overview. Overall, the task is addressed, placing this response at Band 5.5, rounded to Band 5.0 due to inconsistencies in data reporting.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into several paragraphs, attempting to group information logically; however, the progression of ideas is frequently disrupted by poor transitions and disjointed sentences. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or incorrectly, such as the sudden shift using 'However household which are owned accommodation...' and the isolated concluding sentence starting with 'but in comparison...'. Paragraphing is also erratic, with abrupt transitions between ideas about rented and owned accommodations. While there is an overall structure attempting an introduction, body, and conclusion, the mechanical and sometimes repetitive use of linking elements limits clarity. These organizational faults place the response firmly at Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, relying on standard terms like 'percentage', 'households', 'rented accommodation', and 'owned accommodation'. There are several spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'accomodation', 'stright' (straight), 'til', 'husehold', and 'analysing'. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary items such as 'proportion', 'ratio', and 'gradually grow up', these are often used inaccurately or affected by collocation errors (e.g., 'the rented household figure stright decline'). The lexical range is minimally adequate for the task, but frequent mechanical and spelling errors cause some difficulty for the reader, fitting the Band 5.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak. There are frequent errors in verb tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions, such as 'The household in rented accomodation is highest', 'it stayted at 31%for whole two years', and 'the owned houshold rise in last few years'. Punctuation is also problematic, with missing capital letters, missing commas, and run-on phrasing. Because attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty and errors are widespread enough to occasionally impede smooth reading, this performance aligns with Band 5.0.
