Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided bar chart illustrates data on house renting and owning by percentage in Engalnd and Wales, over a 93 years period from 1918 to 2011.

Overall, the trend was completely different over time: from 1918 to 1971 the percetange of rented accommodations was higher than private households, while after 1971 it was the complete opposite. In addition, in 1971 the figures were exactly the same.

Between 1918 and 2001 there was a gradual increase in the number of owned houses, with a peak of just under 70% in 2001. Rented accommodations, instead, reported a slow decrease from approximately 75% to just over 30% in 2001, followed by a slight rise in 2011 with 35%. Furthermore, 1971

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, finishing abruptly at 117 words with an unfinished sentence ('Furthermore, 1971'). Despite this limitation, the student successfully identifies the main trends and makes relevant comparisons between owned and rented accommodation. The overview captures the major shift around 1971 accurately, and key data points such as the peak of owned houses in 2001 (approx. 70%) are reported. However, due to the incomplete conclusion and under-length nature of the piece, Task Achievement cannot exceed Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The text is organized into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, followed by an overview paragraph, and a body paragraph detailing the trends. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to contrast the two categories, such as 'while after 1971' and 'instead'. However, the progression is cut short abruptly at the end of the response due to the missing completion of the final sentence. Paragraphing is generally appropriate, but the lack of a proper concluding sentence restricts the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a task 1 response, utilizing terms such as 'illustrates data', 'gradual increase', 'peak', and 'slight rise'. There are a few spelling and typographical errors, such as 'Engalnd' and 'percetange'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with reasonable success, though overall word choice remains fairly standard rather than sophisticated.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'from 1918 to 1971 the percentage of rented accommodations was higher than private households'. There are some grammatical and prepositional lapses, such as 'data on house renting and owning by percentage' and 'over a 93 years period' (should be 93-year period). However, these errors do not impede communication. The main grammatical drawback is the incomplete final sentence.
