Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line chart illustrates about house ownership as well as rental accommodation in England and Wales. The data regarding household availability are from 1918 and 2011.

To begin with, the rented accommodation was at peak in 1918 and it was near about 78 percentage where else the house ownership was somewhere at 22 percentage. It had been observed that the usage of rental model of a house had a decline till 2011. And then from 1971 the consumer started using house ownership rather than the past renting process.

Moreover, there was a sudden spike in 1991 for ownership accommodation and from there onwards it kept increasing for both England and Wales till 2011. And the chart shows the renting a house option kept reduced compared to past time period.

In conclusion, there was a rise and fall had been measured for both house ownership and renting, but the numbers kept increasing for owning a house.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to cover the main trends in the chart, noting the high proportion of rented accommodation in 1918 and the eventual dominance of home ownership by 2011. However, the data points selected are occasionally inaccurate or imprecise, such as stating renting was "near about 78 percentage" and home ownership was "22 percentage" in 1918 (which broadly aligns with the 77% and 23% figures), but misinterpreting subsequent trends by stating that home ownership kept increasing until 2011 without noting the dip in 2011 (where home ownership dropped to 64% and renting rose to 36%). Furthermore, the introduction incorrectly identifies the visual as a "line chart" rather than a bar chart. While the overall picture is partially addressed, the lack of precision and inaccurate reporting of the end period prevent a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is divided into four paragraphs, which attempts a logical structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. However, the progression of ideas is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and confusing phrasing, such as "And then from 1971 the consumer started using house ownership rather than the past renting process." Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes incorrectly, such as "where else" instead of 'whereas', and repetitive use of "And" at the beginning of sentences. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion is weak, leading to a choppy and disjointed reading experience.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently relying on simple terms like "house ownership", "renting a house", and "numbers kept increasing". There are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and unnatural collocations, such as "household availability", "usage of rental model", and "renting process". The student also incorrectly identifies the chart type as a "line chart" in the opening sentence. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey a basic meaning, it lacks the precision and range required for higher band scores, leading to frequent strain for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response shows a very limited range of grammatical structures. The student attempts some complex sentences, but these are frequently marred by structural errors and awkward phrasing, such as "the rented accommodation was at peak in 1918 and it was near about 78 percentage where else the house ownership was somewhere at 22 percentage." Errors in articles, prepositions, and tense usage are frequent, such as "the consumer started using house ownership" and "there was a rise and fall had been measured". These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader, though the core meaning can generally be deciphered.
