Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The student attempts to cover the main trends in the chart, noting the overall shift between owned and rented accommodation from 1918 to 2011. However, there are significant factual errors in data reporting and severe confusion between the two categories. For example, the student writes that 'house household ownership started off with just over 75%', whereas owned homes actually started at 23% (77% was rented). Furthermore, the data details are mixed up: the student states that rented accommodations reached a peak of 'around 70& in 1971 before plummeted to reached about 65%', which completely misreads the trends for home ownership and renting. Additionally, the response falls short of the 150-word minimum, containing only 141 words. These factors restrict the score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay attempts an overall structure with an introduction, body details, and a summary, though the final sentence trails off unfinished ('In summary, number of house ownerhsip takeover'). Paragraphing is somewhat disjointed, and the logical flow is disrupted by contradictory data and major misinterpretations of the chart series. Cohesive devices are used (e.g., 'Overall', 'Delving into the data', 'In summary'), but referencing is frequently unclear or incorrect, such as mixing up which category 'overtook' the other. Overall arrangement shows basic organizational awareness, but cohesion is faulty and mechanical.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range to discuss general chart trends, utilizing words such as 'percentages', 'gradually', 'significantly', and 'exponentially'. However, there are numerous spelling errors ('accomodations', 'Whales', 'appartments', 'comencement', 'timespan', 'plummeted', 'ownerhsip') and inaccurate word choices/collocations (e.g., 'rented or hired', 'number of house ownerships'). The confusion between the two data series also indicates issues with lexical precision in context. Vocabulary is sufficient for the task but marred by frequent slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as subordinate clauses ('it is explicitly evident... that number of house ownerships increased'). However, grammar and punctuation control is weak, with multiple errors including missing articles ('that number of house ownerships'), tense inconsistencies ('prefered', 'begun', 'inclined'), and awkward or ungrammatical verb forms ('before plummeted to reached about 65%'). The response culminates in an incomplete sentence fragment. These errors frequently distract the reader, though they do not entirely prevent comprehension.
