Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main trends and making relevant comparisons between owned and rented accommodation from 1918 to 2011. A clear overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the contrasting trajectories of both categories. Key data points, such as the peak for rented accommodation in 1918 (77%) and the surge for owned homes reaching 69% in 2001, are accurately cited from the chart. While some phrasing is awkward, the data selection and reporting fulfill the requirements well, aligning with Band 7 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into four paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs dedicated to each category. Ideas are logically sequenced, and cohesive devices such as 'overall', 'however', and 'onwards' are used to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct trends. However, some transitions and referencing feel slightly mechanical, and the use of 'going to the other category' is overly conversational, which keeps the score at a Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'trajectory', 'gradual rise', and 'surge'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'houses that is owned' instead of 'proportion of houses', 'residence that were chartered' instead of 'rented accommodation', and 'a slightly jumped' instead of 'a slight jump'. While these errors do not impede communication, they reflect limitations in lexical control, placing the response firmly in the Band 6 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as introductory subordinate clauses ('talking about the residence that were chartered demonstrate...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors regarding subject-verb agreement and word forms, including 'share of the houses that is owned', 'residence that were owned... showed gradual rise', and 'pull the percent to around'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical inaccuracies occur often enough to impact the overall accuracy of complex forms, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.
