Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The chart illustrates percentage of households in owned and and rented accomodation in the two places- England and Wales from the years 1918 to 2011.

Overall, we can see the percentage of households in the rented accomodation is continuously decreasing over the coming years whereas it is the opposite with the households in rented accomodation meaning more people preferred owned accomodations as the years passed.

In the year 1918, the percentage was at the highest ie almost 80% changing it to the lowest in the year 2001 that is around 31% which rose a liitle to 35% in the year 2011.

It is also shown that from the year 1918, the percentage kept increasing till 2001 which recorded to be 69% and has a little drop in 2011. There was a particular time where percentages of both owned and rented houses were 50% in the year 1971.

In overall, the ending which is the year 2011 shows the downfall of rented accomodation and ascend of owned accomodation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully covers all main trends shown in the chart, highlighting the overarching shift from rented to owned accommodation between 1918 and 2011. You included key data points, such as the peak of homeownership at 69% in 2001, the starting figures in 1918, and the notable crossover point in 1971 when both sectors stood at 50%. A clear overview is provided, capturing the primary long-term changes effectively. However, there are minor confusions in your second paragraph where you mention the percentage in rented accommodation as being at its highest and then refer to it dropping to 31%, which slightly blurs the distinction between the two categories. Nevertheless, the core requirements of Task 1 are well satisfied.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear overall progression, starting with an introductory statement, moving through body paragraphs detailing specific trends and data points, and finishing with a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used to link ideas together, such as 'Overall,' 'In the year 1918,' and 'It is also shown that.' However, the paragraphing is somewhat fragmented, with several very short paragraphs that could be combined for a more cohesive flow. Additionally, referencing is occasionally repetitive, and phrases like 'In overall' at the start of the final paragraph are awkward and unidiomatic.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to discuss percentages, trends, and specific years. You attempted some less common vocabulary items such as 'downfall' and 'ascend.' However, there are several spelling errors, including 'accomodation' (repeatedly misspelled with a single 'm'), 'liitle', and 'overall' used incorrectly as a prepositional phrase ('In overall'). Word choices are sometimes repetitive, relying heavily on basic descriptive terms rather than more precise academic synonyms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response incorporates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. For instance, you successfully used relative clauses and time clauses, such as 'meaning more people preferred owned accomodations as the years passed.' However, there are notable grammatical inaccuracies and awkward phrasings throughout, such as 'changing it to the lowest' and 'which recorded to be 69%.' Punctuation and article usage are also occasionally faulty, for instance missing the article before 'percentage' in the opening sentence. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they restrict the score to a Band 6.
