Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart illustrates the proportion of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and wales from 1918 and 2011.
Overall, it is clearly seen that the percentage of rented house showed a downward trend throughout the period, while people who lived in owned house, showed an upward trend over the period in both countries.
Turning to the data the most popular accommodation from 1918 to 1961 was the rented house than owned house. At the beginning of the period, the figure for rented accommodation was more than three times that of owned house. But in 1971, owned and rented house recorded identical figures, accounted for 50%.
Furthermore, the proportion of own houses considerably increased, form 60 to around 70% in 1981 and 2011 respectively. In addition, the percentage of rented accommodation was just below 40% in following years.
The figure for own houses was considerably higher than that for rented accommodation, standing at above 60% and below 40% respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student successfully addresses the main features and trends in the chart. The overview captures the opposing trends of owned and rented accommodation over the period. Key data points are accurately reported, such as the 1971 crossover point where both types accounted for 50%, and the dominance of renting in 1918. However, there are some minor factual inaccuracies or awkward phrasing in reporting specific figures, such as stating the rise was from 60 to 70% between 1981 and 2011 (it was 60% in 1981, 69% in 2001, and 64% in 2011). Furthermore, the reference to 'both countries' in the overview is slightly inaccurate as the chart covers England and Wales combined as a single region, not two separate entities. Overall, the response covers the task well, but these minor confusions keep it at Band 6.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, followed by an overview, and then detailed body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions, such as 'Overall', 'Turning to the data', and 'Furthermore'. However, paragraphing and referencing are occasionally faulty; for instance, the final two sentences feel disconnected and repetitive regarding the final figures. Additionally, the referencing in 'both countries' is confusing since the prompt specifies England and Wales as a single combined area. Cohesion can sometimes feel slightly mechanical. Despite these minor issues, there is a clear logical progression throughout the text, warranting a Band 6.5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms like 'proportion', 'downward trend', 'upward trend', and 'considerably increased'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'rented house' instead of 'rented accommodation' or 'houses', and a grammatical slip in 'form 60 to around 70%' instead of 'from'. There are also awkward expressions like 'the percentage of rented house showed'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main message, the presence of frequent minor lexical inaccuracies prevents the score from reaching Band 7.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as subordinate clauses ('while people who lived in owned house, showed an upward trend'). However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the response, including subject-verb agreement issues ('people... showed'), missing articles ('than owned house'), and incorrect prepositions ('from 1918 and 2011'). There are also awkward commas disrupting sentence flow ('while people who lived in owned house, showed'). Although these errors do not impede overall communication, their frequency means the grammar does not consistently achieve the error-free standard required for a higher band.
