Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the prompt by identifying some main features of the chart, such as the peak in owned accommodation in 1991 and the general trend of homeownership rising while renting fell. However, the overview is factually incorrect and contradictory, stating that households in owned accommodation had a slight decrease and halved in percentage, whereas the data clearly shows a major increase from 23% to a peak of 69%. Furthermore, the description of the trends contains serious inaccuracies, such as claiming 1918 started at 20% and fluctuated up to 40%, and misinterpreting the 2011 figures and relationships between the two categories. These data misreadings and a flawed overview place the response at Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is arranged into four paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. However, the logical progression is significantly hindered by confusion in the overview and inaccurate data reporting. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'firstly, in the beginning of start-up at 1918' and 'At last in 2011'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow which country or category is being referred to at certain points. Paragraphing is attempted, but overall cohesion is mechanical and faulty, aligning with a Band 5 descriptor.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with frequent word choice and collocation errors (e.g., 'illustrat how much percentage', 'beginning times', 'pleaturng' instead of plateauing or crossing, and 'remaing as half than'). There are also spelling errors like 'accomodation', 'incresae', and 'remaing'. While the student attempts less common vocabulary such as 'fluctuated' and 'significant decrease', the frequent lexical inaccuracies and spelling mistakes occasionally cause strain for the reader, which is characteristic of Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty or ungrammatical (e.g., 'household in owned accommodation in both countries had a slight decrease ,decreasing up to half in its percentage compared to beginning times'). Punctuation errors are noticeable, such as missing capital letters at the beginning of sentences ('firstly'), missing articles ('in beginning of start-up'), and incorrect spacing before commas. Frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing cause some difficulty for the reader, placing this criterion at Band 5.
