Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and comparisons of the chart. The overview clearly highlights that rented accommodation was dominant in the earlier period, whereas home ownership became significantly more prevalent towards the end of the timeframe. Key data points, such as the crossover point in 1971 (50%) and the peak of home ownership in 2001 (around 69%), are accurately included. The figures reported are consistent with the visual data. The response meets the requirements well, though a slightly more detailed comparison of the opposing trends could further elevate the analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The text has a clear overall progression, moving logically from an introductory overview to specific data points for the first half of the century, the 1971 midpoint, and the subsequent decades. Paragraphing is used appropriately to structure the information. Cohesive devices such as 'In 1918', 'Then', 'By 1961', and 'After 1971' guide the reader effectively through the timeline. However, there are minor cohesive flaws in the second paragraph, where sentences like 'However from 1991 to 2011 households in owned accommodation is significantly increase' lack smooth connection and contain structural errors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 response, using appropriate terms such as 'percentage', 'homeowners', 'rose gradually', 'declined', and 'peaked'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with some success, although there are noticeable word choice and collocation issues, such as 'households in owned accommodation is significantly increase' instead of a noun phrase functioning correctly, and the awkward phrasing 'In 2011 rising slightly'. Spelling is generally accurate, but vocabulary control prevents it from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as introductory prepositional phrases ('In 1918, only 23%...') and subordinate clauses ('Whereas approximately 77% of households lived...'). However, there are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement and tense issues, such as 'households in rented accommodation is higher' and 'is significantly increase' instead of 'increased significantly'. Additionally, the final sentence 'In 2011 rising slightly to approximately 35%' is a fragment. These errors occasionally disrupt the flow, but communication is not impeded.
