Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the task by comparing the proportion of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011. An overview is provided, stating that owned houses rose sharply while rented houses fell. However, there are several data inaccuracies and misreadings. For instance, the student states that in 1961 owned accommodation reached 50% (it was actually 41%, with 50% reached in 1971), and in the conclusion claims that rental accommodation rose to 'nearly 65%' by the end of the period (it was 36%). Furthermore, capitalization and basic punctuation are absent. These errors place the response in Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is organized into paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for owned and rented housing. However, logical progression is hindered by factual errors in data reporting. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Overall', 'At the beggining', 'Then', and 'In Contrast', but referencing is sometimes faulty and mechanical. Paragraphing is attempted, but sentences lack proper punctuation boundaries, leading to run-on sections. This level of organization and mechanical cohesion aligns with a Band 5 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The lexical range is limited and repetitive, featuring basic vocabulary such as 'proportion', 'houses', 'rose', and 'fell'. There are also spelling errors ('libing' for living, 'beggining' for beginning) and awkward word choices like 'own bought houses' and 'lowest peak'. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey basic trends, the numerous errors and lack of sophisticated phrasing restrict the score to Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control is weak. There is a complete lack of capitalisation and punctuation throughout the text (e.g., missing periods at the ends of sentences, uncapitalized proper nouns like 'england and wales'). Grammatical errors include tense inconsistency and awkward phrasing such as 'reached to 50% percent' and 'amount to nearly 70%'. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect Band 5 descriptors.
