Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The student attempts to address the task by reporting the main trends for both categories across the provided years. A clear overview is attempted at the beginning, noting the general decrease in rented accommodation and increase in owned accommodation, alongside the intersection point in 1971. However, there are several inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, the student states that rented accommodation peaked at 78% in 1918, whereas the chart shows 77%. Furthermore, some data points are vague or incorrectly described, such as stating that 1991 and 2001 were constant while figures actually changed slightly from 68% to 69% for owned and 32% to 31% for rented. While the main features are captured, the precision issues and occasional awkwardness in selecting key details place this response in Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is divided into four paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the trends for owned and rented accommodation. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Overall', 'In contrast', and 'Looking at the details', but their application is often mechanical or repetitive ('And turning to the household', 'And further reaced'). Paragraphing is logically attempted to separate the general patterns from specific figures. However, referencing and transitions within paragraphs can be confusing, such as the abrupt sentence fragments ('Execept in final year') and punctuation errors that disrupt the logical flow. Overall cohesion is moderately adequate, supporting a Band 5.5 score.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for basic reporting, employing terms like 'proportion', 'gradually increased', and 'peak level'. However, there are frequent spelling errors ('signaficantly', 'accomodation', 'Execept', 'reaced', 'reahed') and inappropriate word choices ('people of owned live places'). The range of vocabulary is limited, and attempts to use less common items result in non-standard phrasing and collocation issues. Although meaning can generally be extracted, the density of lexical errors restricts the score to Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the people in rented accomodation was signaficantly decreased', 'they are gradually increased'), tense inconsistencies, and fragmented sentences ('Execept in final year.'). Punctuation is also problematic, with missing commas and misplaced periods breaking up sentences unnaturally. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect Band 5.0 descriptors.
