Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student covers all key parts of the task by identifying the main trends and making relevant comparisons between households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011. An overview is provided, noting the overall rise in homeownership and decline in renting. Key data points, such as the peak of homeownership in 2001 and the parity between the two types in 1971, are accurately reported. However, some minor details are slightly imprecise (e.g., stating that rented housing was at its peak in 1918 and dropped below 70% in 1939, whereas it started at 77% and fell to 68%). The response would benefit from more precise data selection in places, but overall it fulfills the requirements of Task 1 adequately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is arranged logically with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that handle the two categories separately and chronologically. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overall trends from the specific data details. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Conversely', 'On the other hand', 'Initially', and 'Following this', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive ('After this'). Referencing is generally clear, and there is a discernible logical progression throughout the text, meeting the criteria for a Band 6.5 or solid Band 6 performance.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully using terms like 'percentage', 'proportion', 'decline', and 'peak'. There are some minor lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors, such as 'england and wales' (uncapitalized) and 'accomodation' (spelled with a single 'm' in places). Attempts at less common vocabulary are generally successful ('increased sharply', 'stable at this point'), but vocabulary control remains somewhat standard rather than sophisticated. Overall, the lexical range is sufficient for the task and does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses ('while the percentage increased', 'After this, it undergone a sharp decline'). There are several grammatical errors present, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the households in rented accommodation was', 'it undergone') and tense inconsistencies ('remains stable'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though capitalization rules for proper nouns like 'England' and 'Wales' are overlooked. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede overall communication, placing the response comfortably within the Band 6 descriptor.
