Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response attempts to address the prompt by describing the overall trends in housing accommodation from 1918 to 2011. However, the task achievement is limited by severe structural and informational deficiencies. The opening sentences are conversational and repetitive, and the student misreads or misrepresents the 2011 data at the end of the essay, claiming that the trend for owning a house was 'too much then renting a house' while ignoring the fact that homeownership actually dropped from its 2001 peak of 69% down to 64% in 2011, whereas renting rose to 36%. Furthermore, key data points like the 1953 figures and specific interval comparisons are omitted. The overview is weak and imprecise, preventing the response from reaching higher bands. It meets the criteria for Band 4.0 due to minimal and partially inaccurate coverage.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The essay suffers from a lack of proper paragraphing, presented instead as a poorly connected block of text with run-on sentences. Cohesive devices are repetitive and mechanical, relying heavily on phrases like 'As we can see' and 'As the chart shows'. Logical progression is severely hindered by the absence of clear punctuation, periods, and capitalization control. For instance, the sentence starting with 'And in 1981 the trend...' drags on with clause after clause without appropriate breaks, making it difficult to follow the logical development of ideas. There is no clear framework or paragraph structure distinguishing an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. This places the response firmly at Band 4.0 for coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.0

The lexical range is basic and repetitive, frequently reusing terms like 'trend', 'household', 'owning', and 'renting' without sufficient variety. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'living on the rent', 'breakeven', and 'outgrow'. The phrase 'too much then renting a house' demonstrates a very limited control of comparative vocabulary. While the basic topic vocabulary is recognizable, the frequency of inappropriate word choices and lack of less common lexical items restrict the score. Spelling and basic word formation are generally functional, but vocabulary limitations impede precise communication. This corresponds to a Band 4.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

Grammatical control is weak throughout the response. The text is characterized by severe run-on sentences joined improperly by conjunctions and relative clauses, combined with a total absence of correct punctuation or periods. There are numerous basic grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'there is different percentages' and tense inconsistencies. Complex sentence structures are attempted but are almost uniformly faulty, often resulting in ungrammatical strings of clauses. Punctuation is practically non-existent, and capitalization is erratic (e.g., lowercase 'i' used independently). The majority of sentences contain major structural errors, leading to a band score of 4.0.
