IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The chart compares the ratio of rented and personal houses in two UK countries (England and Wales) between the time period of 1918 to 2011.

Overall, the personal households were accounted for the smallest share during the initial years but the percentage steadily increased throughtout the years and was more popular during the mid years and showed a dip in the very last year. On contrary, rented households demand had fluctuations in initial years but then steadily declined. However, both household demands were equal at one specific period.

During the year 1918, personal accomodation was not popluar among people and represented nearly a quarter, the numbers increased slightly and remained the same in 1939 and 1953 and was little above one-third. However, since that period, the ratio started to climb steadily throughout the years from 1953 to 2001 and hit a high of nearly three-quarters but slightly declined in 2011 and was a little above three-quarters. On the other hand, rented premises were quite in demand in the first year of 1918 and was around 75%. The numbers declined since then, and during 1939 and 1953 there was a decline in rented households and shared a slight difference in numbers and remained under 70%. The numbers declined steadily from 1953 to 2001. And showed a slight increase in demand in 2011 which represented around 38%

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and comparisons of the chart regarding accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011. An overview is present, highlighting the main trends such as the steady increase in owned accommodation and the decline in rented properties, alongside the point of intersection in 1971. Key data points are cited, such as the 1918 figures and the peak percentages. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and vague descriptions in the data reporting, such as stating in the conclusion of the body paragraph that 2011 owned accommodation was 'a little above three-quarters' when it was actually around 64 percent, which slightly detracts from precision. Overall, the task is addressed well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized logically with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and a detailed body paragraph. Cohesive devices are used to link ideas, such as 'Overall', 'On contrary', and 'During the year 1918'. However, paragraphing is somewhat weak as the entire detailed body of data is crammed into one very long paragraph instead of being broken down logically (e.g., separating the two housing types or different time periods). Additionally, some linking phrases are slightly unnatural, such as 'On contrary' instead of 'In contrast'. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow is occasionally hindered by clunky transitions between sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 response, employing terms like 'ratio', 'steadily increased', 'fluctuations', and 'peak' (though 'hit a high' is used). There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, but these are occasionally marred by word choice errors or awkward collocations, such as 'personal houses' and 'personal households' instead of 'owner-occupied households' or 'households in owned accommodation'. Spelling is generally accurate, but some phrasing sounds unnatural or repetitive. The lexical range is sufficient to communicate the main ideas, but precision is lacking in places.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases. There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text. For example, 'the personal households were accounted for' contains a passive voice error, 'popluar' is a typo, and 'And showed a slight increase' is a sentence fragment starting with a conjunction. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing full stops or awkward comma splices. While these errors do not impede overall communication, their frequency prevents the response from achieving a higher band score.
