Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response attempts to address the task by reporting features of the chart, but it is severely compromised by widespread factual inaccuracies and a misreading of the data. For example, the student claims that in 1918 the percentage of households in owned accommodation peaked at 77% (which was actually the rented figure), and asserts that in 1939 and 1953 owned accommodation remained constant at 67% (whereas the actual figure was 32%). Furthermore, the overview is confused and inaccurate, stating that rented accommodation had a higher percentage in the 'last years' and reversing trends. While the crossing point in 1971 at 50% is correctly identified, the persistent factual errors mean the response fails to accurately present the main features and comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The essay is divided into short paragraphs, but the logical flow and progression are weak. The overview paragraph contains contradictory and confusing statements, such as 'the highest percentage of households in owned accommodation in the starting years, but in the last years the more percentage of households in rented accommodation.' Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes misused, such as 'Moreover' and 'In the center of the period'. Referencing is also problematic, leading to confusion between the two categories. While the text has a general structure typical of a Task 1 response, the internal coherence within paragraphs is hindered by poor referencing and unclear relationships between ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical range is quite limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms like 'percentage', 'households', 'owned accommodation', and 'rented accommodation'. There are several noticeable lexical errors and inappropriate word choices, such as 'housholds' (spelling), 'peak at' used for past data incorrectly, 'ratio' used instead of percentage, and 'reach at' or 'remain the same'. Vocabulary is sufficient to convey a very basic topic, but inaccuracies and awkward collocations cause some confusion for the reader, preventing it from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent errors in verb tense and preposition use, such as 'in the last years the more percentage', 'the percentage of both households have equall', and 'remain constant at 67%'. Subject-verb agreement issues and missing auxiliary verbs are also present. While some sentences are understandable, the high frequency of grammatical errors and awkward phrasing means that meaning is occasionally distorted or requires reader effort to decipher.
