Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart illustrates the percentage of households that owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.
Overall, it is clear that the percentage of homeowners increased over the period, while the proportion of rented accommodation declined. The two figures became equal in 1971.
On the one hand, in 1918 the number of householders in rented accommodation showed a significant level by approximately 79 percent in contrast with the percentage of householders having their own residence with only 21 percent. Between 1939 and 1961, the percentage of householders with rented homes declined slightly from 69% to 59%, while the percentage of house owners increased from 31% to 42%. In 1971, both householders showed an equal proportion at 50%.
In contrast, the householders with rental accommodation continued to decline from 40% to 31% till the year 2001 and then increased by 33% in 2011, following that the figure of residents with their own homes continued to increase from 60% to 69% untill the year 2001, and then fluctuated and showed a slight decrease to 62%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a clear overview and reporting the main features of the chart. The overview accurately highlights the main trends: homeownership increased while renting declined, intersecting in 1971. Key data points are accurately cited, such as the 1918 figures (approx. 79% rented vs 21% owned) and the 1971 parity at 50%. The student makes effective comparisons throughout the response. Although there are some minor discrepancies with exact data readings towards the end of the text (e.g., reporting 2011 owned as 62% instead of 64%), the overall representation of the data is clear, well-supported, and meets the requirements for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is logically organised and shows clear progression throughout. It begins with a suitable introduction, followed by a concise overview paragraph, and then body paragraphs detailing the specific timeframes. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'Overall', 'On the one hand', and 'In contrast', which help guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction/overview from the detailed body points. However, some transitions in the final paragraph are slightly clunky or run-on (e.g., 'following that the figure of residents...'), which prevents the cohesion from being entirely seamless, keeping this criterion solidly at band 6.5 to 7.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate and sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'proportion', 'householders', 'homeowners', and 'fluctuated'. There are appropriate attempts at less common phrasing such as 'significant level' and 'equal proportion'. However, some word choices and phrasing lack complete precision or natural collocation, such as 'the number of householders in rented accommodation showed a significant level' and 'both householders showed an equal proportion'. Minor lexical inaccuracies occur, but they do not impede communication, allowing the response to comfortably achieve a band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and comparative structures effectively (e.g., 'The bar chart illustrates the percentage of households that owned and rented accommodation...'). There is good control over basic grammar, and punctuation is generally handled well. However, some complex sentences become overly long and slightly tangled, particularly in the final paragraph ('following that the figure of residents with their own homes continued to increase from 60% to 69% untill the year 2001, and then fluctuated and showed a slight decrease to 62%'). A spelling error ('untill') also appears. Because the majority of sentences communicate meaning clearly despite minor errors, a band 6.5 is appropriate.
