Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response makes an attempt to summarise the main features of the chart, correctly noting the crossover point in 1971 where both categories reached 50%. However, there are factual inaccuracies in the reporting of trends; for example, the student claims that households in owned accommodation lowered between 1918 and 1961, whereas the data clearly shows an increase from 23% to 41%. Furthermore, the response suffers from a negative word count penalty, as it falls short of the 150-word minimum by 10 words (containing 140 words). Overall, the task is only partially addressed due to inaccuracies and under-development.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response attempts a logical structure by breaking down information into separate paragraphs. However, the progression is weak and somewhat repetitive, with overlapping points about the time periods. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as starting paragraphs with 'Secondly' and 'In addition' when the sequence of points is confused. Paragraphing is also fragmented, resulting in very short, disjointed sections rather than a cohesive flow. Referencing is basic, and overall readability is hindered by mechanical transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, relying heavily on simple terms like 'percentage rate', 'households in owned', and 'households in rented accommodation'. There are noticeable word choice and phrasing errors, such as 'While the years goes by, they was a change' and spelling errors like 'acommodation'. The range of vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for conveying simple ideas, but lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The text displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, with frequent and distracting errors. Examples include tense and agreement issues such as 'its shows that', 'they was a change', 'households in owned had a lower rate', and 'whereby the had the same percentage rate'. Punctuation is largely absent, with missing capitalisation at the start of sentences and missing full stops at the end. These recurring errors frequently impede communication and strain the reader.
