IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The bar chart illustrates the pecentages of owned households and rented accomodation in England and wales between 1918 and 2991.
Overall we can see the percentages of households by y axis and years on x axis. Gray bars shows the owned places and black bars represents rented accomodations. A quite variation can bee seen over the years. Rented accomodation representing the higest percentage in 1918 and least pecentage in 2001. On the contrary owned households have lowest percentage about 22 percent in 1918 and owned places shows greatest percentage around 69 % in year 2001.
In the earlier years it can be seen that rented households were more common than owned accomodation. But this percentage tends to decrease over the years and increasing the ratio of personal accomodation. In year 1971, both the personal and rented places have the same percentage about 50%. After 1971 owned housholds trend tend to increase and and rented accomodation starts to decrease.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student attempts to address the prompt by summarizing the main features of the bar chart regarding housing tenure in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011. An overview is attempted, noting the general trends and crossover point in 1971. However, there are some inaccuracies and typos in the data reporting, such as stating the end year as '2991' instead of '2011' and quoting the initial owned figure as 'about 22 percent' (the chart shows 23%). Furthermore, describing the chart's axes ('percentages of households by y axis and years on x axis') is unnecessary feature-spotting of the diagram layout rather than reporting the data itself. The response covers the main features—the rise of home ownership and decline of renting—satisfying the basic requirements, but lacks thorough development and precision.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is divided into three paragraphs, but paragraphing logic is somewhat flawed. The second paragraph is a dense block of text mixing chart descriptions, legend explanations, and multiple data points, making it difficult to follow. Cohesive devices are basic and sometimes repetitive ('On the contrary', 'In the earlier years', 'After 1971'). Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'Gray bars shows the owned places and black bars represents rented accomodations' appearing in the middle of a paragraph rather than as part of an introductory methodological description. Progression is apparent as the response moves chronologically, but the overall mechanical structuring limits clarity.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
Lexical range is limited and repetition is common, particularly with words like 'percentage', 'households', 'accomodation' (which is repeatedly misspelled as 'accomodation'). Other spelling errors include 'pecentages'. While the student attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'contrary', 'common', and 'trend', word choices are often basic or imprecise (e.g., 'A quite variation can bee seen', 'increasing the ratio of personal accomodation'). The vocabulary is adequate to convey the general message, but spelling errors and restricted range constrain the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but grammatical accuracy is weak. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, such as 'Gray bars shows', 'black bars represents', 'Rented accomodation representing', and 'owned housholds trend tend to increase and and rented accomodation starts'. Punctuation and word form errors also occur (e.g., missing articles, double conjunctions like 'and and'). While some sentences are comprehensible, the frequency of basic structural errors causes distraction and occasional difficulty for the reader.
