Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by describing the main trends in owned and rented accommodation between 1918 and 2011. However, the response suffers from significant data errors and lacks a clear, cohesive overview. For instance, the student states that house owners in 1918 were 'up to 20%' (actual is 23%) and rental households in 1981 were 'up to 70%' (actual was 40%, while 1918 was 77%). Furthermore, the overview merely states that 'papulation of household peoples increased in every year,' which is simplistic and inaccurate since homeownership fluctuated and rental rates decreased overall rather than strictly every single year. The response relies heavily on a rigid, mechanical listing of data points year by year rather than effectively selecting and reporting main features or making meaningful comparisons. Consequently, Task Achievement falls into the Band 5 category.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is divided into rudimentary paragraphs, beginning with an introduction and overview, followed by separate body paragraphs for owned and rented accommodation. However, the overall organization lacks logical progression and smooth transitions. Cohesive devices are either missing, inadequate, or repetitive. For example, the student relies on repetitive transitional adverbs like 'Firstly' and 'Secondly' to introduce paragraphs, and uses awkward linking structures ('in last year 2011 its was little up'). Paragraphing is mechanical, separating the data into disjointed bullet-like points rather than a flowing analytical report. There is no clear progression of ideas across the text, making the overall structure feel disjointed and heavily reliant on a robotic recitation of years and percentages. These features align with the Band 5 descriptors for Coherence and Cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical range used in this response is extremely limited and repetitive. The student continuously relies on basic vocabulary such as 'increase', 'decrease', 'same', 'house owners', and 'rental households'. There are also several word choice errors and unnatural phrases, such as 'peoples how owned their houses', 'papulation of household peoples', and 'payed rent'. Spelling and word formation are problematic in places ('papulation', 'payed'). The vocabulary is barely adequate to communicate the basic meaning of the chart, and there is no attempt to use less common lexical items or paraphrase the prompt effectively. This performance fits comfortably within the Band 5 criteria for Lexical Resource.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical range is very limited, consisting mostly of simple, repetitive sentence structures featuring a subject, verb, and year-by-year data listing (e.g., 'in 1939 was 30%'). When the student attempts more complex or descriptive constructions, frequent grammatical errors occur, including subject-verb agreement issues ('house owners... was', 'its decreased again'), incorrect prepositions ('in the gap of different years', 'above over to'), and tense inconsistencies. Punctuation is also weak. Although simple sentences are sometimes understandable, the frequent errors in basic grammar and sentence construction impede the flow of communication. This reflects a typical Band 5 profile for Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
