Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given bargraph illustrates the percentage of the households in england and wales which are owned and rented accomodation between 1981 and 2011.

According to the chart, the household in rented accodation had the highest percentage of around 77% whereas the next few years the percentage remained stabilized in 1939 to 1953. After that, from 1961 the percentage of rented accomodation faced declined upto 59%. Similarly, in 1971 it went down nearly 50% furthermore in 1981 it fell to 40%. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to summarise the main features of the chart, noting initial differences between rented and owned accommodation and mentioning several specific year data points. However, there are significant factual inaccuracies regarding the data. For instance, the introduction states the time period is between 1981 and 2011, whereas the chart shows 1918 to 2011. Furthermore, the overview contains a confusing contradiction stating that households in owned accommodation were 'less through out the year but slightly it increased on the last few years', which does not accurately reflect the overall trends. The response also trails off abruptly with 'On the other hand,' and fails to meet the 150-word minimum length requirement, falling short at 149 words. These shortcomings restrict the score to a 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response exhibits some basic organisation with an introduction, an overview paragraph, and a body paragraph. However, the logical progression is hindered by contradictory statements and mechanical transitions such as 'According to the chart', 'After that', and 'Similarly'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the paragraphing breaks down entirely at the end of the text where the student leaves an unfinished sentence fragment ('On the other hand,'). Cohesive devices are used rather repetitively and sometimes inaccurately. Overall, the structure shows signs of basic planning, but the flow and mechanical cohesion meet the criteria for a band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for a basic description, including words such as 'percentage', 'households', 'stabilized', and 'declined'. However, there are numerous spelling errors throughout the text, including 'bargraph' (bar graph), 'england and wales' (capitalisation errors), 'accomodation' (accommodation - misspelled multiple times), 'begining' (beginning), 'accodation' (accommodation), and 'stabilized' (stabilised). Less common lexical items are attempted but often marred by inaccurate word form or spelling, which restricts the lexical score to a band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ('which are owned and rented accomodation') and comparative forms. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors including missing articles ('in england and wales', 'on the last few years'), incorrect prepositions, and awkward phrasing ('the percentage of household in owned accomodation is less through out the year'). Punctuation and sentence boundary issues are also noticeable, culminating in an incomplete final sentence fragment. Because errors are frequent and occasionally cause strain for the reader, a band 5.0 is appropriate.
