Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover the main trends in the chart, noting the general shift from rented to owned accommodation over the period. However, there are significant issues with terminology and data interpretation. The writer confuses 'tenants' and 'landlords' throughout the overview and body paragraphs, describing tenants as the properties themselves or confusing renters with owners. While the peak years and general figures (e.g., ~77% renting in 1918, ~69% owning in 2001) are roughly captured, the expression of ideas is often confused and contains inaccuracies regarding what the data represents. Consequently, the task is addressed only partially, warranting a band score of 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is divided into four paragraphs, attempting an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for rented and owned accommodation. However, the logical progression is hindered by poor referencing and confusing phrasing, such as in the overview where 'tenets were taken into the account' and 'paradoxical pattern was formed'. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately (e.g., 'These percentage were reduced', 'Somehow, minor reduction'), making the transitions between ideas mechanical and difficult to follow. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion is weak. This fits the criteria for a band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is very limited and frequently inaccurate. The writer repeatedly misuses key terms related to housing, writing 'tenets' (likely meaning tenants) and 'landlords' instead of 'rented accommodation' and 'owned accommodation'. Other lexical errors include 'how much amount of the households', 'peoples were owned the households', and 'slight inclination'. Word choices are basic, repetitive, and occasionally cause severe strain for the reader due to inappropriate collocations and lexical inaccuracies, placing it firmly at a band 4.5 or 5.0. Band 5.0 is awarded as meaning is still just retrievable.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is poor. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout, including subject-verb agreement issues ('number of the landlords were increased', 'rented houses were remained constant', 'owner increased rapidly'), incorrect passive forms ('were accounted for rent'), and awkward phrasing ('makeup around 69%'). These errors are frequent and often cause some difficulty for the reader, though they do not completely obscure the intended meaning. This performance aligns with band 5.0 descriptors.
