Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover the main trends in the bar chart, noting the general rise in owned accommodation and the corresponding decline in rented accommodation between 1918 and 2011. However, the response contains several inaccuracies and misreadings of the data. For instance, the student states that owned accommodation was 25% in 1918 (actual is 23%) and later mentions that rented homes fell to 10% in 1971 (actual is 50%). Furthermore, the overview attempted in the second paragraph is confusing and inaccurate regarding which category was highest at the start. The data selection and reporting lack precision, leading to a partial fulfillment of the task requirements. Consequently, this performance aligns with Band 5 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text is divided into four paragraphs, which shows an attempt at a conventional essay structure. However, the progression of ideas lacks clarity due to numerous mechanical errors and poor cohesive devices. Sentences such as '28 year own accommodation increase significantly' and 'Furthermore, 20 year it was rising' demonstrate faulty referencing and awkward transitions. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical flow of information is frequently disrupted by fragmented sentences and confusing time markers. Repetitive phrasing and inadequate linking mean that ideas do not flow smoothly, placing this response firmly in the Band 5 category.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is very basic and often inaccurate. There are numerous spelling errors, such as 'poprortion', 'househouldes', 'dramaticily', and 'declinr'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'significantly' and 'dramatically', but these are used with incorrect grammatical forms or misspellings. Word choice is frequently unnatural, for example using 'personal accommodation' instead of 'owned accommodation'. While the reader can generally grasp the intended meaning despite the errors, the severe limitations in lexical control and persistent spelling mistakes restrict the score to Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 based on positive marking for attempt.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences are simple or attempt complex structures that are heavily flawed, such as 'It is clear that the number of percentage rented accommondation was highest, while owned was the less in the period.' There are frequent errors in verb tenses, prepositions, and sentence construction (e.g., 'rented house was fall at 58%'). Punctuation is also erratic, with stray periods and spacing issues throughout the text. These frequent grammatical errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader and prevent the text from reaching a higher band, making Band 4.5 appropriate.
