Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student covers the main features and trends of the chart, noting the overall shift from rented to owned accommodation over the period. An overview is present at the end of the first paragraph, and key data points are cited (e.g., the 1971 crossover point at 50%, and figures for 2011). However, there are several data inaccuracies and confusions within the body paragraphs. For instance, the student mistakenly attributes the 1981 owned accommodation figure of 23% to owned houses, when the source data shows 23% for owned accommodation in 1918 and 60% in 1981. Furthermore, 'households in owned accomodation were lowest in 1981 about 23%' directly contradicts the chart. Because of these noticeable data misreadings and minor under-development in comparing specific details, the response achieves a Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is divided into three paragraphs, including an introduction with an overview, and two body paragraphs. There is an attempt at logical organization, tracking the timeline from 1918 towards 2011. However, progression is frequently disrupted by confusing statements and abrupt transitions, such as 'While in the middle of the period both houses percentages were equal' appearing in the introductory paragraph before the relevant data is properly introduced and analyzed. Cohesive devices are minimal or mechanically repetitive, with words like 'Moreover', 'After that', and 'Additionally' used awkwardly. Paragraphing is somewhat disjointed, and referencing across sentences is not always clear, leading to a score of 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, relying heavily on terms directly from the prompt such as 'percentage', 'households', 'owned', and 'rented'. There are also frequent spelling errors, including 'accomodation' (repeated multiple times), 'housholds', 'bulidings', 'leveled of', and 'dcrease'. While the student attempts some functional phrasing to describe trends (e.g., 'declined slightly', 'remained stable', 'further increased'), the lexical range remains limited and inaccuracies in word choice and spelling cause some difficulty for the reader, fitting the Band 5.0 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and attempted complex sentence structures, but grammatical accuracy is low. There are frequent structural errors, missing verbs, and run-on sentences, such as 'Overall, the percentage of households in rented houses higher in early four years whereas last four years the percentage of owned houses is high' (missing auxiliary verb and prepositional phrasing) and 'Households in owned accomodation and rented both were equal in 1971 around 50%, than owned household bulidings were increased...'. Punctuation is often weak, with comma splices replacing conjunctions. Because errors are frequent and occasionally impede smooth reading, a Band 5.0 is awarded.
