Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student attempts to address the task by outlining the main trends for owned and rented accommodation between 1918 and 2011. An overview is provided, noting the long-term increase in ownership and decrease in renting, alongside the intersection point in 1971. However, there are notable inaccuracies in reporting the data: for instance, the writer states that rented accommodation reached its highest point in 1918 at 77 percent (which is correct), but then confuses the peak for owned accommodation, stating it reached approximately 68 percent in 2001 (the actual figure in 2001 was 69%, but earlier they stated it reached its highest in 2001 without clear figures). Furthermore, referring to a line graph (when the prompt shows a bar chart) is a minor misidentification. The response covers the main features, but data reporting lacks precision.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has an overall structure consisting of an introduction, an overview paragraph, and body paragraphs detailing specific data points and trends. However, paragraphing is somewhat disjointed, with very short single-sentence paragraphs breaking the flow. Cohesive devices are used, but sometimes inappropriately or mechanically, such as 'in contract' (instead of in contrast), 'with the passage of time' (repeated excessively), and 'at last'. Logical progression between sentences is occasionally hindered by vague referencing and repetitive phrasing.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'significant decline' and 'rose sharply'. However, there are several spelling errors ('accommudation', 'the both households') and lexical inaccuracies, such as using 'contract' instead of 'contrast'. Vocabulary choices tend to be repetitive, relying heavily on phrases like 'percentage of the households' and 'with the passage of time', which limits the precision and flexibility required for higher band scores.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as using coordinating and subordinating conjunctions ('while the households in the owned accommodation rose sharply'). However, grammatical control is weak, with frequent errors including missing articles ('in rented accommodation', 'at last rented accommodation dropped'), incorrect determiners ('the both households'), and awkward phrasing. Punctuation is also lacking in places, such as a missing space and period management between sentences. These errors occasionally cause slight strain for the reader.
