The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar graph illustrates, the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between the year 1918 and 2011.

In 1918, Renting was far better option then owning the house. Around 78% of people were renting and 22% of people owned the house. Whereas in the year 1939,. Approx 31% bought house and 69% still had rented house. Furthermore in the year 1971, the ratio was even-steven. People initially had started taking intrest in buying house rather then renting. The ratio has reached to 50%.

In 1981, The scenario was completly changed people was more favourable of owning the house then renting. Around 60% people had owned house and 40% people still renting was best option. Moreover, in 2001 the owning house ratio peaked upto 69% and least favourable year for renting 31%. However, in 2011 the ratio had slightly reduced to 65% and renting had a modest rise to 38%.

Overall, in the past years renting was the option people had, as it had peaked to 78%. Then year-by-year the ratio changed and came to equal in the year 1971. And at last, people had owned the house then renting after 1971.
