Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by comparing the proportion of owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011. However, the word count falls below the 150-word minimum at 126 words, which impacts the overall development. Furthermore, there are significant data and timeline confusions in the text. For instance, the student states that private house proportion was 'very low approximately 22% in the year 1981', whereas the data shows 1981 was actually 60%, and 22% relates to 1918. Similarly, the reference to 1981 in the final paragraph for rented housing contradicts the chart. These inaccuracies and the under-length nature of the response prevent it from achieving a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs, representing a logical attempt at structuring an academic task. Cohesive devices such as 'OVERALL', 'ON THE ONE HAND', and 'ON THE OTHER HAND' are utilized to signpost the response. However, referencing and logical progression are frequently flawed due to the confused data points and timeline errors. Paragraphing is present, but the overall mechanical and inaccurate use of cohesive links limits the coherence of the progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a basic vocabulary range suitable for describing trends, employing words such as 'proportion', 'rising', 'declining', and 'marginally'. However, there are numerous lexical and spelling errors throughout the text, including 'ACCOMMODTION', 'DROPING', 'DELINING', and inappropriate word choices like 'rate of private properties' instead of 'rate of homeownership'. The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive, with several instances of incorrect word forms and typos.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text contains a mixture of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, grammatical accuracy is weak. There are issues with missing articles ('in the country England and Wales', 'percentage of private residences'), incorrect verb tenses, and awkward phrasing such as 'rented houses percentage is very high'. Punctuation is also problematic, notably the use of capital letters throughout the entire response. Errors are frequent and occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, though the general meaning remains partially clear.
