Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, containing only 138 words, which impacts Task Achievement. Furthermore, the student misinterprets the data significantly in several places. For instance, in the first body paragraph, the student claims that owned accommodation in 1918 accounted for around 80% and rented accommodation was 22%, whereas the chart shows ownership was 23% and renting was 77%. Similarly, the overview contains factual inaccuracies by reversing the main trends, stating that households owning accommodation were significantly higher when renting actually started higher in 1918. While the main features are attempted, the severe data misreadings limit the score to Band 4.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text is divided into logical paragraphs with an introduction and body paragraphs. However, the progression of ideas is frequently impeded by confusing language and inaccurate referencing. Transitional phrases such as 'In 1971, the rented and owner accommodation they remained at similar level' display awkward sentence structures and pronoun redundancy. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical flow breaks down due to contradictions and lack of cohesive control. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, resulting in a somewhat disjointed reading experience. This aligns with the Band 5.0 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is very limited and contains noticeable errors that cause difficulty for the reader. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'substainsial' (which is misspelled) and 'percentage', but frequent word choice and spelling errors undermine the quality. Phrases like 'owned households of owner fell' are unidiomatic and confusing. Vocabulary choice often fails to accurately represent data terms, showing confusion between nouns and verbs, such as 'rented households of rented households'. The lexical range is minimally adequate for basic communication but suffers from persistent errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The student uses a very limited range of structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. Examples of grammatical errors include subject-verb agreement issues ('the number of household that owned accommodation were') and awkward clause structures ('while the rented accommodation of rented households it rose'). Punctuation is basic, and sentence boundaries are sometimes blurred by missing prepositions or incorrect word forms ('owned accommodation of households gradually keep decreasing'). The high frequency of grammatical mistakes causes considerable difficulty for the reader, placing the response firmly in Band 4.5.
