Student answer (Band 5.0)
The bar graph illustrates the percentage of household possessions by classifying it into renting and owned accommodation in England and Wales in between 1918 to 2011.
Overall, we can say that the highest percentage for household in owned accommodation was from 1918 to 1961 whereas in the year 1971 both the households owning and renting accommodation maintained same figures of 50%.
Generally speaking, the household owning was at it's peak in 1918 with 78% but it gradually started to decline over a period of time with the lowest reaching just over 30% in 2001 however it gained a little more than 45% in 2011.
In addition to this, for rented accommodation it was at it's lowest in 1918 with 21% and it gradually started to increase over time with 60%, 67%, 69% in 1971, 1981, 1991 respectively.
Furthermore, both the properties maintained a stable contribution to household in the country with 50% each.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The student attempts to address the task by describing the main trends in the bar chart, but the response contains severe data inaccuracies that contradict the visual information. For example, the student states that the highest percentage for owned accommodation was from 1918 to 1961 and that the household owning was at its peak in 1918 with 78%, whereas the chart clearly shows that ownership started at its lowest (23%) in 1918 and peaked in 2001 (69%). Similarly, the figures for rented accommodation are reversed or misquoted throughout the body paragraphs. Although an overview is present, the inaccurate reading of the data significantly compromises the reliability of the report, leading to a Band 4.5 performance for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is divided into paragraphs, starting with an introduction followed by an overview and separate body paragraphs. However, the logical progression is flawed due to confusingly structured sentences and misplaced overviews. Cohesive devices are attempted (such as 'Overall', 'Generally speaking', 'In addition to this', 'Furthermore'), but they are sometimes used mechanically or inappropriately, given that the underlying data points they connect are factually incorrect. Referencing is also weak, making it difficult for the reader to follow the intended comparisons between owned and rented accommodation. Paragraphing is present but lacks sufficient internal coherence to achieve a higher band.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a limited range of vocabulary with several inaccurate word choices and misinterpretations of data terms. For instance, the phrase 'household possessions by classifying it into renting and owned accommodation' is unnatural and inaccurate. The student frequently confuses 'owning' and 'renting' figures, writing 'household owning was at it's peak in 1918 with 78%' when the chart shows the exact opposite. There are also typographical and grammatical errors in word forms (e.g., 'it's peak' instead of 'its peak'). The lexical range is adequate for basic communication but contains noticeable errors that cause difficulty for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but attempts at complex structures are often clumsy or grammatically flawed. Examples include awkward phrasing like 'the highest percentage for household in owned accommodation was from 1918 to 1961 whereas in the year 1971 both the households owning and renting accommodation maintained same figures of 50%.' Punctuation and articles are missing or incorrect in places (e.g., 'the highest percentage for household', 'maintained same figures'). While communication is not entirely obscured, frequent grammatical errors and awkward syntax prevent the response from achieving a higher band score.
