Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover the main trends in the bar chart, noting the overall increase in homeownership and the corresponding decrease in rented accommodation, alongside the crossover point in 1971. However, the response is incomplete, cutting off abruptly mid-sentence at the end. Additionally, there are numerous data inaccuracies; for instance, stating that in 1918 household work in own house represented 21% (actual value 23%) and rental apartment was 79% (actual value 77%), and misinterpreting the chart as depicting household 'work' rather than accommodation status. Because the task is unfinished and contains several factual inaccuracies in reporting the data, it falls into the Band 5 category.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response attempts an overall overview and uses some basic sequencing language such as 'In 1918', 'By 1961', and 'In addition'. However, paragraphing is underdeveloped and fragmented, and the text ends prematurely without a conclusion or complete final sentence. Cohesive devices are repetitive and sometimes mechanical (e.g., 'In 1939- 1953', 'In 1971', 'In addition'), and referencing becomes unclear due to grammatical confusion and missing text. Overall, the logical progression is disrupted by the abrupt ending and awkward transitions between data points, justifying a Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is very basic and often inappropriate for an academic task. For example, the student refers to households as 'household work in own house' and 'rental apartment', and misuses terms like 'plunged' (which is decent for trends, but combined with awkward phrasing) and 'catagory'. Spelling errors such as 'accomodation', 'similarliy', 'perecentage', and 'catagory' are noticeable. While there is an attempt to use less common vocabulary like 'significantly increased' and 'accounted for', the persistent lexical inaccuracies and unnatural phrasing restrict the score to Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement, preposition use, and tense consistency, such as 'in own accommodation the household is significantly increased', 'in rented house is was continuously plunged', and 'both catagory were reached the 50%'. Punctuation and sentence boundaries are also problematic, culminating in a sentence fragment that trails off at the end of the text ('and rented household at just'). These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher band, placing it firmly at Band 5.0.
