Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the entire timeframe. The overview clearly identifies the major shift from rented to owned accommodation as the primary trend, and also highlights the crossover point in 1971. Key data points, such as the initial dominance of renting in 1918 (around 78% vs 22%) and the subsequent rise of homeownership peaking around 68-69% in 1991 and 2001, are accurately cited and supported by the chart. Although there are a few minor approximations in reading the exact percentages, these fall well within acceptable limits and do not detract from the overall clarity and accuracy of the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. It begins with a helpful introductory statement and an overview, followed by well-defined body paragraphs that break down the timeline chronologically. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related years and trends together. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as "Furthermore," "In contrast," and "After that," although some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure. Referencing is generally clear, ensuring the reader can easily follow the comparison between owned and rented accommodation.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task, successfully utilizing terms such as "proportion," "trend," "dominance," and "accommodations." Less common vocabulary is attempted with varying degrees of success, but terms are generally understandable. However, there are several lexical and spelling inaccuracies throughout the text, such as "accommodations" used where uncountable, "accomdation" (spelling error), and awkward collocations like "rented house was at 35%" instead of households living in rented accommodation. These errors do not impede communication but prevent the score from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure. For instance, relative clauses and comparative structures are attempted, as seen in "renting accommodation by far the most suitable option which is accounted for..." However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors, including missing verbs or prepositions (e.g., "the proportion reached at the same level", "owned housing starts dominating"), incorrect verb tense usage ("countinues its dominace"), and awkward phrasing. While these errors do not obscure the overall meaning, they occur frequently enough to restrict the band score.
