Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar graph depicts the proportion of households in privately owned and occupied on rent for live in England and Wales in 1918 as well as 2011.
Overall, individually owned homes gradually grew from 1918 to 2001 and slight decline in 2011. Rented houses declined from 1918 to 2001, exception in 2011.
Regarding the personally owned accommodation, it accounted for more than 20% in 1918, making it the least preferred in this year. While, a minimal incline was noticed in figure from 30% in 1939 to 40% in 1961. The samee number of owned and rented homes were seen in 1971, which was half, each. Privately owned accommodation significantly surged in 1981, with two-thirds and there was a noticable decrese in 2011 to above 60%.
Turning to the rented accommodation, it stood at more than 75% in 1918, which was the highest proportion comapred to the private houses. Whereas, a slight drop was seen from 1939 to 1961, with below 60%. There was a sudden fall in 1991 and the same percentage was noticed in 2001. However, it substantially rose in 2011 to more than one-third.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features and trends of both categories across the entire timeframe, spanning from 1918 to 2011, rather than just the two endpoints mentioned in the opening sentence. Key data points are cited, such as the peak of homeownership in 2001 at 69 percent and the high level of rented accommodation in 1918 at over 75 percent. An overview is present, outlining the general inverse trajectories of the two housing types. However, certain parts are slightly under-developed or vague; for instance, the description of the 1971 data as 'half, each' is somewhat imprecise, and the treatment of specific intermediate years lacks the depth required to reach a higher band. The selection of data is largely relevant, fulfilling the baseline requirements while showing partial elements of more comprehensive task interpretation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure. It begins with an introductory paragraph, followed by a clear overview paragraph, and then splits the body details logically between owned and rented accommodation. Cohesive devices are employed to signal transitions and comparisons, such as 'Regarding the personally owned accommodation' and 'Turning to the rented accommodation'. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or slightly faulty. For example, the sentence structure linking 'While, a minimal incline was noticed...' misuses cohesive conjunctions, and the progression between some sentences feels abrupt rather than smoothly flowing. Paragraphing is utilised adequately to separate the introduction, overview, and body paragraphs, though the mechanical nature of the linking devices keeps the response within this band.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, successfully communicating trends and proportions with phrases like 'proportion of households', 'gradually grew', 'slight decline', and 'significantly surged'. The student attempts less-common vocabulary, such as 'preferred', 'incline', 'decrese', and 'substantially', but these attempts are accompanied by inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and spelling, such as 'occupied on rent for live', 'The samee', and 'noticable decrese'. Furthermore, awkward phrasings like 'proportion comapred to the private houses' detract from precision. While communication is not impeded and the range is sufficient to convey the main features, spelling and lexical errors prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation lapses throughout the text, including awkward phrasing like 'households in privately owned and occupied on rent for live', missing articles ('a slight decline', 'a sudden fall'), and prepositions inside grammatical patterns. For instance, writing 'exception in 2011' instead of 'with the exception of 2011' and 'in figure' rather than 'in the figure'. These errors occur regularly alongside some error-free simple sentences, but they rarely impede communication, reflecting a profile that successfully meets the lower band criteria while showing only occasional control of more complex structures.
