Student answer (Band 6.0)

Overall, it can be seen that upto 1961 the accommodation of household in owned was high, after that the households in rented accommodation was high.
To begin with, in the year 1918 only 22% of household owned their home, compared withapproximately 78% that rented. The proportion of homeowner increased gradually about 31% in 1939 and 32% 1953. It then rose to roughly, 42& in 1961 before reaching 50% in 1971, when the figures for owning and renting were equal.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response satisfies the word count requirement and successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main trends and making relevant comparisons between owned and rented accommodation from 1918 to 2011. The overview correctly captures the central shift from rented to owned homes over the period. However, the development of ideas leans towards a mechanistic listing of data points rather than fully extending the underlying trends. For instance, the second paragraph misinterprets the overall trend by stating that accommodation in owned houses was high until 1961, when in reality rented accommodation was higher during the first half of the timeline. This minor confusion around the crossover point prevents the response from reaching a higher band, as some ideas are under-developed or inaccurately synthesised.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is divided into logical paragraphs, starting with an introduction and overview, followed by chronological body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'It then rose', and 'After 1971' are used adequately to guide the reader through the data, demonstrating elements of a higher band. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure, preventing it from achieving full mastery. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different time periods, ensuring that the overall arrangement remains coherent and easy to follow from beginning to end.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The lexical resource is adequate for the task, providing sufficient vocabulary to report trends such as 'increased gradually', 'rose to roughly', and 'declined'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'proportion', 'homeowner', and 'accommodation', but there are noticeable errors in word choice, form, and spelling. Examples include 'ratio of household' instead of 'proportion of households', 'accomodation' and 'rentd' (spelling slips), 'household in owned' (awkward phrasing), and typographical errors like '42&' and '60% to in 1980'. These inaccuracies, along with occasional awkward collocations, restrict the lexical score to this level, though communication is generally maintained.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses and time markers like 'compared with approximately 78% that rented' and 'when the figures for owning and renting were equal'. There is a mix of error-free sentences alongside some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'upto 1961 the accommodation of household in owned was high', 'only 22% of household', and 'recorded on 2001'. Preposition and article slips ('in 1980' vs 'on 2001') are present. These errors rarely impede communication, reflecting a control typical of this level, but the frequency of minor structural and agreement slips prevents the grammar score from rising further.
