Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The graph compares the percentage of owned and rented accommodation of households living in England and Wales over the period of time between 1918 and 2011.
Overall, what stands out from the graph is that more people preferred to live in rented homes during the first half of period. After that, this trend shifted to owned properties. Meanwhile, the figure was very low of owned accommodations in the beginning, but it rose up until the period end.
Looking at the chart, above 70% individuals were in rented houses in 1918, which then decreased and remained stable until 1953. After then in 1971 both trends were equal. Finally rented house trend went down more over next 20-year and recorded a small jump around 35% in 2011
The owned property trend was low in the beginning in 1918, but it followed the upward trend and matched the figure of rented accommodation to 50% in 1971. Then it went up for the next 30 year upto 70% and ended with around 60% in 2011

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the chart, successfully achieving a clear overview that captures the major shift in accommodation trends between 1918 and 2011. Data is appropriately cited to support key points, such as the initial dominance of renting at over 70% and the crossover point in 1971. However, some areas are slightly under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies, such as the statement that owned accommodation reached around 60% in 2011 when the chart shows it closer to 64%, and a slight imprecision regarding the 1939-1953 stability period. Nevertheless, the response fully satisfies the requirements for the lower band and demonstrates enough development to bridge partially into higher levels.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction, through an overview, to body paragraphs detailing the two main trends. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate ideas. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Overall', 'Looking at the chart', 'Finally', and 'Then', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'Then' and 'After that'. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional awkward phrasing at the start of sentences slightly disrupts the natural flow of information. The organization successfully guides the reader through the data, meeting all criteria for a well-structured response while showing room for more flexible and seamless cohesive linking.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive phrases such as 'trend shifted', 'upward trend', and 'small jump'. However, there are notable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form. Examples include 'percentage of owned and rented accommodation of households' instead of 'households living in owned and rented accommodation', 'figure was very low of owned accommodations', and 'rented house trend went down more over next 20-year'. There are also minor spelling and phrasing slips. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score, as greater precision and natural collocation are needed to reach higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like 'above 70% individuals were in rented houses in 1918, which then decreased...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, such as missing articles ('the period end', 'next 30 year', 'next 20-year'), preposition usage ('low in the beginning in 1918'), and subject-verb agreement or phrasing ('above 70% individuals were'). However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication. The control of grammar is generally sufficient to make the meaning clear, though a wider variety of faultless complex structures is needed to attain a higher band.
