Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons between owned and rented accommodation from 1918 to 2011. An overview is successfully provided, identifying the main general trends. However, some parts of the response are more fully developed than others, and specific data points contain minor inaccuracies, such as stating the final year figure for owned accommodation dropped to 65% when the chart indicates 64%. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response contains only 129 words, falling short of the 150-word minimum. To reach a higher band, the writer must ensure all data is reported with precision and expand the response to meet the minimum length requirement with fully developed supporting details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logic to the progression of ideas. Information is structured into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and a body paragraph. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as "Overall," "In 1918," and "However," though some referencing and linking feels slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, and body content. To move further up the band scale, the writer could employ a wider variety of cohesive devices more fluidly and divide the detailed body information into two distinct paragraphs for enhanced readability and clearer organization.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to successfully convey trends using terms like "downward trajectory," "upward trend," and "proportion." There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though this is accompanied by minor spelling slips, such as writing "silgtly" instead of "slightly," and slight lexical inaccuracies like "owned houses accommodation." These errors do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the writer should incorporate a wider and more precise range of less common lexical items with accurate spelling and natural collocations, such as "homeownership" or "tenancy rates."
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over structures like subordinate clauses introduced by "whereas" and "while." There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as the missing plural noun in "proportion of household" in the opening sentence and an incorrect article in "owned houses accommodation," but these errors rarely impede communication and the majority of simple structures are error-free. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and eliminate basic agreement and article errors.
