Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making comparisons between owned and rented accommodation over the 1918 to 2011 period. However, some trends are misread or inverted, such as stating that households in rented accommodation 'gradually rose' when they actually fell significantly. Similarly, some details are confusingly mixed up, like the description of rent percentages at the end of the period. While an overview is present, the inaccuracies in data interpretation prevent the response from achieving a higher band, meaning ideas are only partially and sometimes incorrectly developed based on the visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical arrangement, moving from an introductory overview to body paragraphs that detail the trends chronologically. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two housing types. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Subsequently', and 'Conversely' are employed to guide the reader through the data, although referencing and linking are sometimes a bit mechanical. This fully satisfies the requirements of the lower band while showing part of the next through its clear structural organization and logical flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting less common items such as 'proportion', 'markedly climbed', and 'significant decrease'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, including typos like 'accomodation' and 'considerately' instead of considerably, as well as unnatural phrasing such as 'pleatued' and 'ratio surges'. These inaccuracies do not completely impede communication but restrict the range and precision of the response, keeping the lexical score at this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures with time clauses and contrasting elements. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('at end of period'), preposition errors ('dipped at 65%', 'down till 2001 at 30%'), subject-verb agreement issues ('the both ownership and rented trend becomes equal'), and punctuation slips like '1918 t0 2011'. These errors require some effort to decode but rarely impede overall communication, reflecting a mix of controlled simple sentences and faulty complex attempts.
