Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview and selecting the main trends from the chart regarding housing in England and Wales. The overview captures the main movements well, noting that rented accommodation decreased while owned homes increased. However, some parts of the response are slightly under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, the starting figure for renting is transcribed as 78% rather than approximately 77%, and details about specific years occasionally blur. To reach a higher band, the response would need to consistently maintain precision when reporting figures across the entire timeline without minor data discrepancies.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure separating the introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Transition signals such as 'Overall', 'To begin with', and 'In contrast' are used to guide the reader through the data. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or features slight awkwardness in referencing, such as the sudden shift between categories. While logical progression is established, paragraphing and referencing can be refined to ensure seamless transitions between comparative points. To improve further, the writer should ensure that cohesive devices connect ideas more naturally and that the progression of data flows without abrupt leaps between years.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'drastically decrease', 'significantly increased', and 'skyrocketed'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations, such as 'percentage of purchasing a new house or a rented apartments' and 'highest favourable choice of living', where the word forms or prepositions do not align naturally. Spelling and word choice errors are present but do not entirely impede communication. To move to a higher band, the student needs to use precise word forms consistently and demonstrate a more natural control of academic collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, attempting various grammatical forms with moderate success. There are several grammatical errors regarding subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, such as 'the number of houses continuously showed a declined trend' (instead of declining trend), 'the population in owned accommodations are' (instead of is), and 'it increase' (instead of increased). These errors occur frequently enough to affect overall accuracy, though they rarely impede the reader's understanding. To achieve a higher band, the student must exercise greater control over verb tenses and agreement in complex clauses.
