Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response falls well short of the minimum length requirement of 150 words, stopping abruptly at just 83 words. Consequently, the task is addressed only partially, as the student fails to provide a complete summary of the chart and cuts off mid-sentence. While the opening sentence successfully paraphrases the prompt, the selection and reporting of main features is severely limited and contains factual inaccuracies. For example, the student claims that in 1981 there was approximately 75% of households in rented accommodation, whereas the chart shows the actual figure was around 40%. The attempt to report 1939 data is also confused and incomplete. To improve, the student must ensure they write at least 150 words, carefully check data against the visual prompt, and develop a comprehensive overview with key comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
The response displays basic organizational attempts, such as using 'Overall,' to introduce a general trend, but it lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is not properly managed, as the text consists of a single truncated block of writing. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as the sudden transition 'Moreover, it also reveals' which does not logically connect the ideas. Furthermore, referencing is weak, and the abrupt ending prevents any logical development of a cohesive structure. To reach a higher standard, the writer needs to group related data into distinct paragraphs, use cohesive devices more naturally to guide the reader through the comparisons, and ensure all sentences are fully completed and logically sequenced.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, showing a limited range appropriate for the task. There are several spelling and word-form errors that detract from the quality, such as 'accomodation' (accommodation), 'dramatical' (dramatically), and 'owing' (owning). The student also misuses vocabulary by stating 'households in owned resident' instead of 'households in owned accommodation'. While the lexical choice is minimally adequate to convey simple ideas, these noticeable errors and limited flexibility restrict the score. To improve, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of precise vocabulary related to data trends and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical range is quite limited, relying on basic structures with frequent errors. There are noticeable issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'the households renting accomodation shows' (instead of 'show') and 'was approximately 75% households' (missing a preposition or phrase like 'there were'). Punctuation is also problematic, evidenced by missing spaces after commas (e.g., '1918,1939'). Attempts at complex structures are flawed, and frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer must improve sentence variety, ensure accurate subject-verb agreement, and eliminate basic punctuation and structural errors.
