Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially. While the student attempts to report on the main features of the chart, the information presented contains several inaccuracies and confusion regarding the data. For instance, the text states that rented accommodation reached about 80% in 1918 and mentions various confusing trends such as numbers doubling in the first four years, which do not accurately reflect the visual data. The overview attempts to summarise the general trends, but the lack of accurate data interpretation limits the development of ideas and results in an under-developed response that struggles to clearly communicate the overall patterns shown in the graph.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some organisation to the response, but it lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted with separate sections for introduction, overview, and body details, but the logical flow between sentences is occasionally hindered by confusing transitions and unclear referencing, such as the ambiguous use of pronouns and shifts in subjects like 'Domestic units' and 'household'. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or repetitive, leading to a mechanical feel that prevents the writing from achieving a truly smooth and clear progression throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that may cause some difficulty for the reader. There are several spelling mistakes, such as 'propprtion', 'familes', 'expericenced', 'decine', and 'rised'. Additionally, word choice is sometimes imprecise or inappropriate, such as referring to houses as 'leased accommodation', 'rental houses', 'rented flats', or 'Domestic units' when the chart simply refers to rented accommodation. These lexical limitations and errors constrain the precision of the descriptions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer demonstrates a limited range of structures, relying on a mix of simple and somewhat faulty complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The bar graph illustrate'), missing articles ('recorded a lowest percentage'), and awkward prepositional or grammatical patterns ('expericenced and increase', 'trend with with'). Attempts at complex sentence structures often result in errors, and while meaning can generally be parsed, these frequent inaccuracies cause some difficulty and distraction for the reader.
