Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response attempts to address the prompt by reporting information from the chart regarding households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011. However, the task is only partially addressed because the content contains noticeable inaccuracies and confusion with the data, such as referencing the year 1917 which does not exist in the chart, and stating that 'less people have their own house' in the overview while the main trend is clearly a substantial rise in homeownership over the period. The selection of main features is limited, and some data points are under-developed or imprecise. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to ensure all reported figures are accurate according to the visual data and provide a clearer, more precise overview of the overall trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organization in the response, beginning with an introductory sentence and attempting to group details, but it lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is not used effectively, as the text is divided haphazardly without clear thematic separation between the overview and the body details. Cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, and at times inaccurate, with overused connective phrases like 'however' and 'by years' that do not clearly establish logical relationships between ideas. Pronoun referencing and referencing of time periods are occasionally unclear, making the flow somewhat disjointed. To improve, the writer should structure the essay into distinct, logical paragraphs and employ a wider, more accurate range of cohesive devices to guide the reader smoothly through the comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. There are frequent spelling errors such as 'propotion', 'accomodation', 'england', 'percnet', 'increse', and 'preffer'. Word choice is also basic and occasionally imprecise, such as using 'surge increase' or 'living in rent a house'. These lexical errors and awkward collocations cause some difficulty for the reader and impede smooth communication. To move to a higher band, the student must expand their vocabulary range related to data trends, improve control over word forms, and carefully proofread their writing to eliminate frequent spelling mistakes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The writer uses a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at longer, complex constructions that turn out faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'household in rented accomodation... from 78 percent to 35'), missing articles (e.g., 'in england and wales', 'in rent a house'), incorrect prepositions, and a complete absence of proper punctuation such as capitalisation and full stops between clauses. These frequent errors cause noticeable difficulty and strain for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to demonstrate better control over basic sentence boundaries, punctuation, and grammatical agreements.
