Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response only partially addresses the task requirements. It is important to note that the length requirement is not met, as the student's response contains only 130 words (excluding the copied prompt), falling short of the 150-word minimum. While the response attempts to summarise the main features, such as the starting point in 1918, the crossover point in 1971, and the figures for 2001 and 2011, the information is limited and under-developed. Some data points are imprecise or approximate without clear referencing, and the overall overview is weak. To improve, the writer must ensure the minimum word count is achieved, provide a clear opening overview statement highlighting major trends, and present data more accurately with better selection.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response shows some basic organisation, but there is no clear overall progression or effective paragraphing. The text is written as a single dense block or poorly separated segments, which hinders readability. Cohesive devices are either missing, inadequate, or repetitive, with phrases like 'in start' and 'with the passage of time' overused. Referencing is also faulty in places, making it difficult for the reader to follow the logical development of ideas. To reach a higher level, the student needs to group information logically into distinct paragraphs, use a wider variety of cohesive ties naturally, and establish a clear, progressive structure from the introduction through the body details to the conclusion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, relying heavily on simple terms like 'house hold', 'accomodation', 'percentage', and 'chart'. There are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word formation, such as 'accomodation' (spelled with a single 'm'), 'prefred' (preferred), 'equall' (equal), and 'increasd' (increased). These errors and limited word choices cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the response to a modest band. To improve, the student should expand their vocabulary to include a wider range of paraphrasing terms and synonyms related to housing trends, statistics, and proportions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying primarily on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex structures that are faulty. There are persistent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('people was accommodate'), missing articles ('in start it was likely'), incorrect prepositions ('on rented accomodation'), and poor tense consistency. Punctuation is also weak, with run-on sentences and a lack of capitalisation at the beginning of sentences. These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student must work on sentence boundaries, accurate verb forms, correct preposition usage, and fundamental rules of English grammar and punctuation.
