Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the chart, such as the overall upward trend in owned accommodation and the corresponding decline in rented properties, along with a helpful comparison of the crossover point in 1971. However, some ideas are under-developed or less precise. For instance, the student states that rented accommodation reached a peak in 1918 at approximately 78% and notes specific figures for other years, but some data points contain minor inaccuracies compared to the visual data, and certain trends are described rather generally. The overview is somewhat basic, consisting of two isolated sentences rather than a fully integrated summary. To reach a higher level, the student should ensure all key data points are stated with greater precision and provide a more cohesive overview that highlights the broader trends across the entire time period.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text demonstrates a basic overall arrangement, with an attempt to separate information into an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs focusing on each category. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. There is a lack of smooth transitions between sentences and paragraphs, and referencing is sometimes unclear, making the progression of ideas disjointed. For example, paragraphs are very short and broken up awkwardly, and linking words to guide the reader through the chronological data are missing or used repetitively. Paragraphing choices also disrupt the flow, as single sentences form their own paragraphs in places. To improve, the student needs to use a wider range of cohesive devices naturally and organize the writing into clear, well-developed paragraphs that establish a logical progression from start to finish.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic concepts related to percentages and housing trends, such as 'proportion', 'increased', and 'decreased'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary and phrases like 'significantly increased' and 'at the peak', but there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and form, alongside a few spelling errors, such as 'england and whales' and 'stabel'. Furthermore, capitalization and punctuation errors occur within sentences, such as missing spaces after periods and unnecessary capitalization. To achieve a higher band, the student should expand their range of vocabulary, improve precision in describing trends and data, and pay closer attention to spelling and word formation to ensure smooth and accurate communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response employs a limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences alongside a few basic attempts at complex forms. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, particularly concerning verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions within grammatical patterns. Examples include 'Households in rented accommodation was at the peak', 'where it was slightly decreased', and 'both owned accommodation and rented accommodation share a same proportion'. While these errors do not completely obscure the overall meaning, they occur frequently and cause some difficulty for the reader. To progress, the student must demonstrate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures while maintaining better control over basic sentence construction, verb tense consistency, and subject-verb agreement.
