Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main parts of the task by outlining general trends and reporting data from the chart. However, some aspects of the task are only partially addressed or contain inaccuracies. For instance, the student states that the percentage of residents in rented houses was at a peak in the year 2011, which directly contradicts the chart showing rented accommodation at its highest in 1918 (77%) and declining thereafter. Additionally, specific figures are sometimes misreported, such as stating the rented percentage reached 35 in 2011 when the chart indicates around 36, and several dates or data points are conflated. Relevant ideas and data are presented, but certain key features are under-developed or inaccurately supported, keeping the performance at this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure, beginning with an introduction, followed by body paragraphs detailing the trends for owned and rented housing, and concluding with a brief summary statement. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, and referencing is not always clear. For instance, the transition between sentences feels abrupt at times, and the use of cohesive devices like 'However' and 'intialzing with' lacks smooth integration. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal flow within paragraphs could be improved to ensure better logical progression and clearer relationships between ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'proportion', 'detrimental decline', and 'accommodatons'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('intialzing', 'commensing', 'accommodatons') and occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'received the boost again' or 'detrimental decline'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they highlight limitations in lexical precision and word formation that prevent the writing from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use varied structures. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly regarding articles, prepositions, and tense usage. Examples include 'gradual increase' missing a determiner, 'to all the way to 2011', and incorrect chronological references such as 'was at peak in the year 2011' when describing the start of the period. Punctuation errors, such as comma splices or missing periods, also occur. These grammatical inaccuracies require some effort from the reader to interpret, restricting the score to this level.
