Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all main features and trends in the chart, noting the overall shift from rented to owned accommodation and correctly highlighting the crossover point in 1971. The data is reported accurately for the most part, although the introduction incorrectly states the timeline ends in 2001 instead of 2011. While the key features are addressed, some details are slightly repetitive or under-developed, particularly regarding the plateau between 1939 and 1953. To reach a higher level, the response would need to ensure every year mentioned aligns perfectly with the prompt data and provide a more fully extended analysis of the wider trends without minor inaccuracies.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the information chronologically. Paragraphing is utilised to separate the introduction, overall summary, and body details, which helps guide the reader. However, the progression between ideas is sometimes mechanical or slightly disjointed due to repetitive use of cohesive devices like 'while' and 'on the other hand'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow of sentences within paragraphs could be smoother to achieve a more natural logical progression. Greater variety and precision in cohesive links are required to elevate this criterion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, but it contains frequent inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and form. For example, the student repeatedly uses non-standard terms such as 'housewares' instead of 'households', and 'personal properities' instead of 'owned accommodation'. There are also awkward lexical combinations like 'smoother progression' and 'progressive decline'. While the meaning is generally communicated despite these errors, the lack of precision and the presence of noticeable word-choice flaws limit the score to this band. A wider and more accurate deployment of topic-specific lexis is necessary for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting comparative structures and time clauses. However, there are persistent grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'households in the rented accomodations has', and awkward prepositional phrases like 'for living in both England and Wales'. Punctuation is also faulty in places, notably the double period at the end of the final sentence. Although these errors rarely impede overall communication, their frequency prevents the response from achieving a higher rating, which requires a greater proportion of error-free sentences.
