Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 2.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word length requirement of 150 words, stopping abruptly at only 47 words (excluding copied prompt text). Consequently, the task is only minimally addressed. The writer mentions the type of chart and attempts an overview by stating that there are two lines representing owned and rented accommodation, but the response cuts off after only a few sentences. There is no selection and reporting of main features, and no comparisons are made between the data sets. To improve, the student must write a complete response that exceeds the word limit, outlines the main trends across the period, and contrasts the two categories of housing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
At this level, the writing shows an attempt to structure the response by including an introductory sentence and transition words such as 'Overall' and 'Initally'. However, because the text is extremely short and cuts off mid-sentence, no meaningful progression or paragraph structure can be established. Cohesive devices are minimal, and referencing fails as the text breaks off prematurely. To achieve higher bands, the writer needs to develop multiple paragraphs that logically sequence information, ensuring that ideas flow smoothly from the introduction to the overview and body details.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, with noticeable errors in spelling and word choice that impede communication. For instance, 'englan' and 'wales' lack capitalisation, 'Initally' is misspelled, and the phrase 'significantly changing these days' is inappropriate for historical data spanning 1918 to 2011. The range of vocabulary is severely limited due to the shortness of the text. To improve, the student should expand their working vocabulary to include precise terms for describing statistical trends, such as 'proportion', 'fluctuate', or 'substantially', and pay closer attention to basic spelling and proper nouns.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical structures attempted are very simple, and the text contains noticeable errors. For example, the sentence 'there is two line' demonstrates a subject-verb agreement error. Punctuation is also lacking at the end of the final incomplete sentence. Because the sample is so brief, it displays a very limited range of grammatical structures with frequent basic errors. To reach a higher standard, the writer must demonstrate control over simple and complex sentence forms, ensure correct subject-verb agreement, and complete all sentences accurately.
