Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially by attempting to report the main features of the chart, such as the initial higher percentage of rented accommodation and the crossover point in 1971. However, some data is inaccurate or poorly communicated, such as stating that rented accommodation rises to 38 percent in 2011 when the chart shows approximately 36 percent. Furthermore, the overview is somewhat confused, failing to clearly summarize the overarching long-term trends from 1918 to 2011. Ideas are limited and under-developed, with basic reporting rather than clear comparisons across the whole time period. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to provide a clearer initial overview and ensure all reported data points are accurate and properly contextualised.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation in the response, with an introduction and a body structure attempting to progress chronologically through the data. However, there is no clear overall progression due to confusing sequencing and referencing issues, such as abrupt transitions between periods like 'In England and Wales from year 1918 to 1961' and 'From year 1981 to 2011'. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or awkward, for instance, the use of 'While' at the start of sentences and mechanical connectors like 'additionally'. Paragraphing is also somewhat erratic. To improve, the writer needs to ensure logical sequencing of ideas and use a wider range of cohesive devices more naturally to guide the reader through the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, relying heavily on repetitive phrasing like 'percentage of rented household' and 'accommodation percentage'. There are noticeable errors in word choice, form, and spelling, such as 'ibelow', 'betwwen', 'houseld', 'percenatge', and 'yrea'. These errors and limited word choices restrict precision. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their lexical range by incorporating synonyms and less common vocabulary related to data trends, while significantly improving spelling and word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer uses a limited range of sentence structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement and verb tenses, such as 'the households in owned accommodation is rise gradually', 'rented household is highest', and 'percentage... is change for both'. Additionally, there are awkward prepositional phrases and punctuation lapses. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To reach the next level, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over basic sentence patterns, ensure correct verb tenses when describing past data, and reduce the frequency of grammatical errors.
