Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to cover the main trends in the chart comparing owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011, but the treatment of the task is limited and partially incomplete. While an overview is attempted in the conclusion, it is vague, stating that people preferred owned households 'except the rented', which lacks clarity and precision. Furthermore, some of the data points and descriptions are inaccurate or inadequately developed. For instance, the writer describes 1971 as a point where the two accommodations 'is same... which was 50%', and mentions 2011 as 'second highest among all decade which was upto 65%', but fails to highlight the significant overarching shift from rented dominance to homeownership dominance over the 93-year period. To reach a higher level, the response needs to provide a clearer, more fully developed overview of the main trends and select key data points with greater accuracy and supporting detail.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response exhibits some basic organisation with a four-paragraph structure comprising an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas throughout the text. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately. For example, transitions like 'After some decade' and 'After nearly two decade' are awkward, and the phrase 'came downstairs' is inappropriate for data description. Paragraphing is attempted, but the logical sequencing within paragraphs is often disrupted by abrupt shifts in time periods without smooth linking. To improve coherence and cohesion, the writer should ensure that cohesive devices are used more naturally and varied appropriately, while establishing a clearer chronological progression that guides the reader seamlessly through the data.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty or sound unnatural. The writer relies heavily on basic terminology and awkward phrasing, such as 'Illustrate' instead of 'illustrates', 'households in owned accommodation was little bit more', and the inappropriate expression 'came downstairs' to describe a drop in percentages. There are also issues with word form and collocation, such as 'the ratio of decreased'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are either missing or flawed. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their lexical range by incorporating precise, task-appropriate vocabulary such as 'proportions', 'surpassed', 'plummeted', and 'fluctuated', while eliminating unnatural word choices and ensuring accurate word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The grammatical range is limited, consisting primarily of simple sentences and repetitive structures. Attempts at more complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause difficulty for the reader. There are numerous subject-verb agreement errors throughout the text, such as 'the households in owned accommodation was' (plural subject with singular verb), 'the households in rented accommodation were raised' (incorrect passive/active voice usage), and 'accommodation is same with the increased'. Additionally, prepositions and articles are misused in various places. To progress to a higher band, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures with good control, ensuring correct subject-verb agreement, accurate verb tenses, and careful proofreading to reduce frequent grammatical errors.
