IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Accomodation is the main problem of a migrant when he moves to big city like England and Wales. Mostly peole like to rent there accomodation, while some of them try to own there households. In the year 1918, almost 25% people owned there own accomodation while 78% of people rented it. If we saw the year 1939 the figure of owning a household rised to 32% while the renting was around 70%. In 1953 this figure remained same with no rise or fall, while in 1961 the own of household increased to 40% and renting decreased from the past years to less than 60%. If we go towarsds the year 1971 the both, renting and owning, own accomodation were on the same page of 50%. After 1961 this difference has been reverced and most of the people like to own there own accomodations while the renters were less now, as we see the major change in 2001 that the owners ratio increased and got almost 70% while the renting was just 30%, and after that this differnce got some change as in 2011 akmost 65% of people owned there own accomodation while 35% of people rented it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially and exhibits a limited approach to presenting the visual data. While the student attempts to report on the percentages of owned and rented accommodation between 1918 and 2011, the overview is missing, and the selection of main features lacks clear focus. Furthermore, there are several inaccuracies in data reporting, such as stating that 'in 1918, almost 25% people owned there own accomodation while 78% of people rented it' (the chart shows 23% and 77%, which is acceptable as an approximation, but the total exceeds 100%), and claiming that in 1939 renting was around 70% while the chart shows 68%. The ideas are limited and under-developed, and the lack of a proper overview prevents the response from moving to a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. The writing is presented as a single, dense block of text without paragraphing, which makes the progression difficult to follow. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or are inaccurate, such as repetitive transition phrases like 'If we saw the year...' and 'If we go towards...'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, for instance, when writing 'the both, renting and owning, own accomodation were on the same page', which confuses the logical connection between ideas. To achieve a higher band, the text must be divided into logical paragraphs and use a smoother range of cohesive devices to guide the reader through the data.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. There is a heavy reliance on basic and repetitive terms, such as 'accomodation', 'household', 'renting', and 'owning'. Moreover, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including frequent misspellings like 'accomodation' instead of accommodation, 'peole' instead of people, 'there' instead of their, 'rised' instead of rose, and 'reverced' instead of reversed. These errors and the restricted range of vocabulary cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a limited lexical resource suitable for this level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences joined by coordinating conjunctions or basic time clauses. Attempts at more complex sentences often contain errors, such as 'Accomodation is the main problem of a migrant when he moves to big city like England and Wales', which contains article omissions ('a big city') and an inappropriate context for England and Wales. Frequent errors in grammar and punctuation persist throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues and misuse of prepositions. These errors can cause difficulty for the reader, keeping the grammatical score at this specific level.
