Student answer (Band 6.0)

The graph chart depicts the proportion of households in owned and rented accommodation in United kingdom and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

Looking from overall perspective, it is crystal clear that the share of owned accommodation considerably surged throughout the period whereas households in rented apartments dropped significantly. It is worth noticing that both accommodations remained stable in 1981.

To begin with, In 1918, only about 22% households owned their homes, while 78% rented them. The percentage of homeowners stayed constant in 1939 and 1953 respectively that is around 32%. Subsequently, it rose gradually from 40% to 60% in 1981. However, after 2001 it slightly dropped to 64% by 2011.

In contrast, the share of renters edged down from 76% in 1918 to 61% in 2001. However, In 2011, it marginally increased to 36%. Nevertheless, owning a home remained considerably more common than renting at the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response falls short of the minimum length requirement of 150 words, containing only 142 words (with 8 words copied from the prompt excluded). While the student attempts to cover the main trends and makes some relevant comparisons, the information is treated somewhat selectively and lacks full development across all data points. For instance, the statement that 'both accommodations remained stable in 1981' misinterprets the data, as 1981 represents the intersecting point where both categories reached 50/40 percent rather than a general period of stability. Consequently, the response addresses the task only partially, leaving certain trends under-developed and containing inaccuracies in data reporting.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at logical organization. The essay is divided into an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for each trend. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Subsequently', 'However', and 'In contrast' are utilized to connect ideas, though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel a bit mechanical or simplistic. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, and body details, contributing to an overall progression, even if some transitions could be smoother and more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic trends through words such as 'proportion', 'surged', 'dropped significantly', and 'edged down'. The writer attempts less common vocabulary, such as 'considerably surged' and 'marginally increased', though there are minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as referring to rented accommodation as 'rented apartments' when the chart refers to 'accommodation'. Additionally, there is a geographical error in the introduction, referring to 'United kingdom and Wales' instead of 'England and Wales'. These errors do not impede communication, placing the lexical range firmly within this band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, attempting constructions like time clauses and contrasting statements. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause some difficulty for the reader. For example, there are missing articles ('In 1918, only about 22% households...'), punctuation and capitalization issues after transitional phrases (e.g., 'To begin with, In 1918...'), and awkward phrasing regarding data points ('The percentage of homeowners stayed constant in 1939 and 1953 respectively that is around 32%'). These persistent structural and agreement errors reflect a limited control of complex grammatical forms.
