Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, coming in at 133 words (excluding words copied from the prompt). Furthermore, the content contains severe factual inaccuracies regarding the data from the chart. For instance, the student states that the proportion of self-ownership properties in 1981 was about 77%, whereas the actual figure was 60%. Similarly, the overview is incorrect: the student claims that owned homes decreased considerably over the entire period, while the chart clearly shows an overall upward trend from 1918 to 2001. Due to these significant inaccuracies and failure to adequately report the main features, the response only achieves a limited engagement with the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response demonstrates some organisation with an attempt at an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs, but the overall progression is heavily hindered by confusion in the data. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Overall', 'In addition', and 'Following this', but their effectiveness is undermined by logical errors in the sequence of information. For example, the body paragraph jumps between years and data points in a way that is difficult to follow. Paragraphing is attempted, but the third paragraph is a single block of text that mixes up data for rented and owned accommodation, making the structure mechanical and sometimes faulty.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, with attempts to use descriptive phrases such as 'proportion of families', 'residing in owned and rented home', and 'followed the opposite trend'. However, there are notable word-choice and spelling errors that detract from the quality, such as 'dicreased', 'Sebsequently', and 'almoss'. The student also misinterprets the categories by referring to the region as 'two countries' and writing 'wales' with a lowercase letter. Less common vocabulary is attempted, but inaccuracies in spelling and collocation prevent the response from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response shows a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences and basic complex forms, many of which contain errors. There are frequent grammatical issues, including subject-verb agreement and prepositional errors, such as 'the proportion of self-ownership properties accounted for about 77%' and 'decreased till 2001'. Articles are also mishandled, as seen in 'in rented accommodation followed the opposite trend'. These frequent errors require some effort from the reader to parse, though the general meaning of individual sentences can usually be understood.
