IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

By looking at the chart we can conclude the trend of accomodation shift from both prospective;interm of rented accomodation and owning accomodation.

If we look on the chart so on Y axis we have the data in percentage corrosponding to X axis where data is presented on yearly basis.

Further onbservation tells us that over the time there is an accending trend towards the owned accomodation as it was approxiately 21 % in 1918 and untill the year 2001 it reached to almost 69% although there is a small downtrend we can see in 2011 where it fall a bit reaching to 64%

on the opposite side the trend for renting the house is in the decending order where it started from 78 % in 1918 to fall almost 31% in 2001 while in 2011 it raised a bit hitting at about 33%

few things which needs to consider is the year 1971 where the trend for rented and owned accomodation were same while 1918 was the year when style of rented accomodation peaked and 2001 where the trend for owned style accomodation was on its peak

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons between households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales. Key data points are cited, such as the starting figures in 1918, the peak for homeownership in 2001 at 69%, and the crossover point in 1971. However, some ideas are under-developed or less fully covered, such as the lack of a clear, unified introductory overview of the chart's general trends. Furthermore, there are minor inaccuracies in some reported statistics, such as stating that renting started at 78% rather than 77%. The selection of data is generally relevant, but the overall presentation lacks the depth and extension needed for a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The text presents a coherent overall arrangement of information, tracing the historical progression from 1918 through to 2011. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. The student relies heavily on basic transitional phrases like 'If we look on the chart' and 'Further onbservation tells us', which creates a somewhat repetitive structural flow. Paragraphing is extremely weak, as the entire response is presented as a single dense block of text without proper separation into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding overview. Referencing and logical progression between sentences could be significantly improved with better use of cohesive devices and clearer paragraph breaks.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to successfully communicate general trends and data points. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary and task-specific terms, such as 'downtrend', 'decending', and 'accending'. However, these attempts are accompanied by noticeable word-choice errors and spelling mistakes, such as 'accomodation' (repeatedly misspelled with one 'm'), 'corrosponding', 'onbservation', and 'accending'. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they reflect limitations in lexical control and precision that prevent the writing from achieving a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional and relative clauses. There are several errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles (e.g., 'on Y axis', 'at about 33%'), awkward prepositions, and run-on sentences lacking proper punctuation (such as the final sentence in the response). Despite these recurring errors, the meaning remains mostly clear and they rarely impede communication. To improve, the student needs to exercise better control over basic sentence boundaries, article usage, and subject-verb agreement while attempting complex grammatical structures.
